Your outie loves to travel. Your outie enjoys exploring new places off the beaten path. Your outie spends time outside and finds joy in long walks. Your outie lives in Ulster County.
Apple TV’s corporate thriller Severance, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Adam Scott (of Parks and Rec fame), may look familiar to some Ulster County residents. The fictional town of Kier utilizes iconic and memorable locations—including the tallest waterfall on the planet, according to Mr. Milchick—in and around Ulster County.
Fans of the show may have already spotted some of these scene-stealing locations, but for those of you who’ve been trapped in an office building all day (and possibly for many years), we’ll let Kier’s hand guide you.
Pip’s – Phoenicia Diner (Phoenicia, NY)

In season one, Mark S., our enduring hero played by Adam Scott, after having an office comms speaker thrown at him by Helly R. (played by Britt Lower), receives a gift card to our beloved Phoenicia Diner—known as Pip’s in the show.
This homey, cozy diner is transformed into a stark, almost clinical film locale where terse, secretive conversations are had in close quarters. But rest assured, in real life, the coffee is just as good, the pancakes are better, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
You can check out their renowned food Tuesday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The whole menu (breakfast, lunch, kids, gluten-free, and vegan) is a winner for every outie.
Dieter Eagan National Forest – Minnewaska State Park Preserve (Kerhonkson, NY)
After the thrilling events of season one, our band of work colleagues (Scott, Lower, Turturro, Cherry) are treated to an ORTBO—Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence—by Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman). In the show, Minnewaska State Park Preserve transforms into the cold and snowy Dieter Eagan National Forest. This retreat is far from relaxing, starting with an unsettling introductory tape placed at the edge of Sam’s Point (best enjoyed at sunrise in spring).
However, the intrepid team does get to see the “Tallest Waterfall on the Planet”—Awosting Falls. While Milchick’s claim may be a stretch, this stunning 60-foot waterfall is one of the county’s most beautiful natural wonders, perfect for hiking and photography in all seasons.
Situated on the dramatic Shawangunk Mountain ridge, Minnewaska rises more than 2,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rugged, rocky terrain. With more than 85 miles of trails and carriage roads, Minnewaska is one of the natural gems in Ulster County. Perfect for day hikers, there are ample camping options for overnight visitors too.
The Birthing Center Entrance – Mohonk Preserve Testimonial Gateway (New Paltz, NY)
The grand entrance to the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz has a shining moment on-screen as the ominous Birthing Center. Here, (spoiler alert!) we learn that severance isn’t just happening at Lumon.
In reality, this stone gateway marks the entrance to the Mohonk Preserve’s scenic trails, offering some of the best hiking, rock scrambling, and views in the Hudson Valley. It’s a far cry from the unsettling world of Severance—here, you’ll find serenity, not corporate mystery.
Owned and operated by the Smiley family since 1869, Mohonk Mountain House is more than just a resort—it’s an Ulster County must-see destination. This breathtaking Victorian castle, perched above a crystal-clear glacial lake and surrounded by 40,000 acres of protected forest, offers an unforgettable escape into nature.
As a National Historic Landmark, Mohonk is dedicated to environmental stewardship and sustainability, blending history with modern luxury. With 85 miles of scenic trails, endless outdoor adventures, and award-winning farm-to-table cuisine—all included in your stay—every moment here is an experience like no other.
Discover this Ulster County retreat where nature, history, and adventure come together in perfect harmony for every outie.
Zufu – Eng’s (Kingston, NY)
Kingston’s oldest Chinese restaurant, Eng’s, becomes Zufu, where a wary and (spoiler!) partially un-severed Mark has an uncomfortable and awkwardly flirtatious conversation with a pushy Helena Eagan, as she tries to suss out the limits of the severance process.
While the on-screen tension is palpable, in real life, Eng’s is a staple of the Kingston community, serving up classic Chinese-American dishes since 1927. Stop in for a plate of lo mein and soak in the history—no corporate espionage required.
Filled with comfy booths, check out their iconic menu along with the available all-you-can-eat buffet on Wednesday and Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
