About Esopus
Once a haven for the well-to-do, this town alongside the Hudson River has plenty of outdoor pursuits — including one of the scariest in the country.
John Burroughs (1837-1921) was one of the most popular and influential authors of his day and is considered the originator of the modern nature essay. The one room cabin interior remains as Burroughs left it in 1920 and is visible through large front windows. It is set within 200-acres of preserve land with a network of Greenway Hiking Trails through dramatic rocky cliffs and pristine woods that inspired much of his writing. A Path-Through History attraction. Slabsides hours: third Saturday in May; first Saturday in October; second and forth Saturdays in June, July, August and September, and by appointment. See website. Trails open year-round, dawn-dusk.
Posh hotels, retro-inspired inns, tricked-out cabins and cozy B&Bs are just some of the lodging options.
