SUMMARY:Batter Up! The History of Baseball in Kingston and Ulster County
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the early history of baseball in Ulster County and the role the region played in the sport’s development during the mid-19th century. Long before professional leagues\, baseball took root in river towns like Kingston and Rondout\, where dockworkers\, tradesmen\, and clerks organized clubs and played on open fields. Drawing on newspaper accounts\, box scores\, and local records\, the talk highlights how baseball functioned as both recreation and community life in the Hudson Valley. Special attention is given to local clubs\, early rivalries\, and games that drew regional and even national attention. This lecture also examines how Ulster County fits into larger stories about amateur baseball\, race\, and the transition toward organized leagues. By focusing on specific people and places\, it shows how national baseball history was shaped by very local experiences. The result is a grounded look at how a global game grew out of small communities along the Hudson River.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Saugerties and Kingston\, we welcome 16 young artists to showcase their work in The Sketchbook Gallery under the direction of Lindsey Quick from the Boys and Girls Club of Ulster County. Come celebrate our first exhibition of the 2026 season by supporting our local community! This exhibition will be up from March 7 – March 22\, 2025 on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4pm. The opening reception is Sat\, March 1 from 2-4pm.

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with transdisciplinary artist Marian (Mau) Schoettle\, the program will honor the 146 garment workers who lost their lives in the 1911 fire. Participants will gather for a collective reading of the victims’ names\, with a bell rung after each in remembrance.\nThe program will also reflect on the enduring significance of labor history in the United States\, with particular attention to the role of immigrant workers in the garment industry. Weather permitting\, attendees are invited to contribute to a temporary chalk memorial.
