SUMMARY:Walkie Talkie with Us: Historic Rondout Walking Tours - Wurts St. Hike
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson River Maritime Museum has announced Walkie Talkie with Us\, a new and novel series of educational historic strolls and more vigorous walks in the Kingston Rondout area. Led by an HRMM Educator and avid walker\, each 1 -3 mile walk will explore a different neighborhood or street in the Kingston waterfront area (Rondout)\, uncovering stories behind historic homes and buildings\, local landmarks\, and the people who shaped Rondout’s past. \nWalkie Talkie with Us is different from other walking tours that provide a walk/stop/talk format which are generally anaerobic. Walkie Talkie with Us tours maintain a gentle yet continuous pace which are more aerobic\, with the Educator turning\, walking and talking\, to share stories and local historical musings with the group. Two routes will be offered on a rotating monthly basis\, including a less strenuous “stroll” and a more rigorous “hike\,” which will include the steep incline of Wurts Street. Routes will be chosen for walkability and seating opportunities\, ensuring comfort and inclusion for all participants.

SUMMARY:The Dutch & Their New York Legacy Lecture with Stephen Blauweiss

SUMMARY:Practical Writing for Non-writers
DESCRIPTION:Do you ever wish you could write better? Write more easily? Write at all? \nThis is for anyone who has struggled to write a text\, a dating app profile\, a business plan\, a palm card\, an application essay\, an artist statement\, a real estate ad\, or a credible explanation about why the cookie jar is empty. \nParticipants will explore the fundamental building blocks of effective writing\, beginning with premise and purpose—understanding what you are trying to communicate and why. The class will cover how to get started\, write about yourself with confidence\, and develop prose that clearly conveys meaning without unnecessary explanation. Through discussions of structure and theme\, students will learn how to organize their writing with intention\, stay focused on their message\, and get to the heart of what matters.

SUMMARY:Hudson River Undercover: Online Lecture
DESCRIPTION:“Hudson River Undercover” explores how working-class recreation and private surveillance collided aboard Hudson River steamboat excursions during the early twentieth century. The talk focuses on an investigation report written mere weeks after the onset of federal wartime alcohol prohibition in July 1919 by an undercover agent working for New York’s Committee of Fourteen\, an influential private anti-vice organization backed by John D. Rockefeller\, Jr. Held in the Manuscripts and Archives Division of the New York Public Library\, the investigation report reveals how wage-earning women articulated femininity and sought out individual freedoms\, companionship\, pleasure\, and romance via Hudson River steamboat excursions at a time when authorities were particularly anxious to monitor and control working women’s leisure activities. \nPresented by Austin Gallas. Austin writes about US history\, focusing on urban moral reform efforts\, private surveillance\, and the politics of leisure culture during the Progressive Era. Austin holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from George Mason University in Fairfax\, Virginia\, where he teaches in the School of Integrative Studies. His work has been published in The Journal of the History of Sexuality\, Lateral: Journal of the Cultural Studies Association\, and Literary Journalism Studies.
